Eastern State Penitentiary - Terror Behind the Walls®

Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone.

Terror Behind the Walls®, ranked the No. 1 Haunted House in America by AOL City Guide, is located inside the massive castle-like walls of Eastern State Penitentiary at 22nd Street and Fairmount Avenue in Philadelphia. An extraordinary theatrical production, Terror Behind the Walls® features animatronic props, digital sound effects, and Hollywood-quality costumes and makeup.

All proceeds from Terror Behind the Walls® ticket sales benefit the preservation of Eastern State Penitentiary, a National Historic Landmark. The haunted attraction does not affect operation of the historic site, which remains open for daytime tours seven days a week, year round. For information on daytime historic tours, visit www.EasternState.org or call (215) 236-3300. Fee includes transportation and tickets to the attraction in the month of October.

Are you looking for a getaway that will rekindle the old fashioned Christmas spirit? Then plan to join us in Wellsboro on Saturday, December 4 as we take a step back in time and celebrate the community's 27th Annual "Dickens of a Christmas". Wellsboro's Main Street and the surrounding side streets will be closed to traffic and will become an early Victorian marketplace featuring all types of delectable wares for eating and drinking, as well as delightful gift items for wearing or enjoying. Food and craft vendors, strolling musicians and singers, dancers, and street-corner thespians will spread up and down Main Street. Performers and vendors will be appropriately costumed and decorated to create a Victorian atmosphere that fits so well with the Wellsboro Gas Lights.
