The Civil War Comes to Wrightsville


Welcome local author and historian Scott Mingus, Sr. for his Civil War presentation based on his book “Flames beyond Gettysburg – The Confederate Expedition to the Susquehanna River, June 1863.” We’ll hear about the Confederates’ mission to seize the vital Susquehanna River Bridge between Wrightsville and Columbia. We’ll also learn about the capture and ransom of York, and the activities around the railroads and Hanover Junction. This important story will help us realize the vital part our area and its residents played in a turning point of the war. To further your experience, sign up for our Civil War hike led by Scott.

Acrylics Painting


Learn everything you need to know about painting with acrylics. This would include mixing color, use of brushes and other supplies and applying the concepts of the elements and principles of design. You will develop your own style of painting. You can use the subject matter of your choosing. Bring a favorite photograph or objects for a still life or you can paint from various still lives in the studio.

Instructor: Debra Gohn, is a local artist and a graduate of MSU.

Matting and Framing Pictures


Cut the cost of matting and framing pictures and photographs by doing it yourself. Make those odd-sized mats inexpensively. You will be able to measure and cut a mat, color coordinate the mat to the picture and differentiate between the kinds of mats available. You will learn how to frame a print and a canvas and wire it for hanging. Information will be provided on where to buy discounted real wood or fabricated wood frames and mat board.

Drawing with Accuracy


Do you look at your drawings and say, “They just don’t look real”? With developing the technique of contour drawing, you will gain eye-hand coordination to draw more accurately. You will add value with numbered pencil or charcoal to create a 3-D effect.

UK Soccer Coaches Clinic


Clinic covers swing basics, putting, pitch shot, full swing and chipping. Certified Golf Professionals from Heritage Hills Golf Resort will teach this series of six lessons. Civil War Comes to Wrightsville Hike with Scott Mingus Sr.

Civil War historian Scott Mingus, Sr. will expand on his Feb. 17 Evening Rendezvous program at Shank’s Mare, with a guided hike through the borough of Wrightsville (easy to moderate difficulty). We will re-trace the movements of the Confederate troops as they approach the borough along with the placements of the Union soldiers as they guard the strategic bridge over the Susquehanna River. This hike will give you first-hand glimpses on the activities just prior to the burning of the Wrightsville Bridge and the Battle of Gettysburg. What a great opportunity to appreciate the history that lies right in our own backyard!

Hike, Vittles & Hops with Greg Bentley

Tackle the Mason Dixon Trail (moderate difficulty) with a Shank’s Mare guide and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the river hills. Then finish your adventure with a tasting tour of some fine craft brewed beers with guest brewer Greg Bentley. Greg has extensive knowledge in not only home-brewed beers, but has toured many of the well-know craft breweries around the Mid-Atlantic. It will be a great hike outdoors, and a delicious adventure indoors with hiking, vittles and hops.

Map & Compass and GPS Basics for Geocaching

This is an information-filled clinic that should appeal to hikers, Scouts, paddlers, and anyone interested in getting started in geocaching. We will begin with some basic map and compass skills. We know this may sound old-fashioned, but the more you know about map and compass basics, the easier it will be to understand your GPS and getting started with geocaching. Plus, what happens if modern technology fails!

Anyway, once we have you acclimated to map and compass, we will move on to the basics of GPS and geocaching. We’ll provide compasses, worksheets, and GPS units. The clinic will also include some work outdoors with your new-found skills.
